Adoption drive gives local animals a second chance this February

The Albury Animal Care Centre is encouraging residents to adopt a pet this February, launching a new campaign: A second chance, your first choice to help more local cats and dogs find permanent homes.

From now until 28 February 2026, adoption fees for all cats and dogs will be waived, removing a barrier for prospective pet owners and creating more opportunities for animals to be rehomed.

To support new adopters, all pets will receive free microchipping and lifetime NSW registration. Cat adoptions include a complimentary first vaccination, while dog adopters will be offered a free education session at the Dog Education Centre in Wodonga to help support responsible ownership and a smooth transition into their new home.

Animals arriving at the centre include lost pets that can’t be reunited with their owners due to a lack of registration and microchipping, as well as those that have been surrendered or abandoned. Non-desexed animals are also leading to an increase in unwanted litters.

Albury Mayor Kevin Mack encouraged the community to consider pet adoption this February, highlighting the benefits of giving a local cat or dog a second chance through the campaign.

“The A second chance, your first choice campaign is a great opportunity for residents to welcome a new pet into their home while supporting our local animals. It’s important to keep your pet safe, so a secure yard for a dog and an indoor environment or cat enclosure is essential,” Mayor Mack said.

Animals at the centre receive routine health and behavioural checks to support adoption, and meet-and-greet sessions help potential adopters determine compatibility with other pets or family members. All adopted pets are desexed and microchipped before leaving the Animal Care Centre.

Community members can view animals currently available for adoption on the Albury Animal Care Centre Facebook page.

To register interest, residents can submit an adoption request via the AlburyCity website or contact the centre on 02 6043 8530 to arrange a meet and greet.
