Billson Park master plan moves to next stage
AlburyCity will progress to the detailed design phase for the redevelopment of Billson Park, following strong community support for the draft master plan.
Seventy-one submissions were received during the public exhibition period from 1 June to 10 July 2025, with the majority supporting the vision to create a modern, inclusive sporting and recreation precinct for the community.
A key theme in the feedback was reassurance around the park’s much-loved clown swing, which attracted the highest number of comments. The swing will be retained and refurbished as part of the play space upgrade.
Residents also highlighted the need for fencing along David Street, particularly around the play space and spectator gathering areas. This will be addressed during the detailed design phase.
Albury Mayor Kevin Mack said the endorsement of the final master plan was an important step forward for the popular community facility.
“Billson Park has a proud history as a home for cricket and community sport in Albury, and this plan sets out a clear pathway to transform it into a facility that caters for future generations,” Mayor Mack said.
“We’re very encouraged by the positive feedback, and by moving to detailed design we’ll be ready to act when construction funding becomes available.”
The master plan identifies Billson Park as the primary home of the Albury Cricket Club and an additional training venue for the Albury Thunder Rugby League Club and other sporting groups. The master plan highlights the need for modern facilities which meet current Australian standards, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all users, and that the redevelopment promotes community safety.
Proposed improvements include:
- A new sports pavilion with changerooms for male and female participants
- New sports field lighting and cricket practice nets
- A district-level play space with accessible equipment
- Enhancements to the community garden (established in 2021)
- More trees and shaded areas
- Improved parking, pedestrian and cycling connections
- Refurbished playing surfaces
A total of $273,000 has been allocated across AlburyCity’s 2025–29 Four Year Delivery Program ($135,000 in 2025/26 and $138,000 in 2026/27) to complete the detailed design phase, ensuring key elements of the plan are shovel-ready for construction.
While funding is not yet secured for construction, achieving shovel ready designs, will allow a detailed funding strategy to be developed with user groups and stakeholders, identifying external grants, user contributions and council funding opportunities.
