Community feedback sought on winter season opening of Albury Swim Centre

AlburyCity is seeking community feedback on the future operation of the Albury Swim Centre during the winter season, including whether it should remain open and under what conditions.

30 Mar 2026

During the winter season, the Albury Swim Centre operates with reduced hours due to lower demand and the additional costs associated with heating, staffing and maintaining the facility.

Operating the Albury Swim Centre costs around $700,000 each year to subsidise, with closing the facility over the winter season estimated to save close to $10,000 per week.

At its 16 March meeting, Council considered whether the centre should close over the winter season, which typically runs from mid-April to mid-September, to reduce costs. While closure remains an option this winter, Council also resolved to explore ways to keep the pool open, including looking at alternative funding options such as a winter season surcharge.

To help inform this process, Council is inviting the community to provide feedback on how they currently use the pool during the winter season and whether they would be willing to contribute financially towards the additional operating costs required to keep the facility open during the colder months.

Albury Mayor Kevin Mack said, where possible, Council was committed to providing access to important community facilities year-round.

“However, we need to balance this with the financial realities of operating the Albury Swim Centre during the colder months. Community feedback will help us understand the level of demand and whether there is support for measures such as a seasonal surcharge to help offset costs.”

“We encourage all users of the Swim Centre, including lap swimmers, families and clubs, to have their say.”

Feedback gathered through this process will help determine if it’s feasible to continue operating the Swim Centre over winter and what model would best meet the needs of the community. The findings will be considered by Council before a final decision is made ahead of the upcoming winter season.

Residents are encouraged to share their views and help shape the future of the Albury Swim Centre by visiting the Engaging Albury website before 24 April 2026.
