Council endorses new direction for Wonga Wetlands project

AlburyCity Councillors have endorsed a new direction for the project previously known as the Murray River Experience – Wonga Wetlands Visitor Education and Experience Centre.

11 Nov 2025

The project will now focus on developing an Interactive Cultural Landscape at Wonga Wetlands, creating a space that celebrates Aboriginal culture and connects visitors to the natural environment.

The new approach represents a significant step towards creating a culturally inclusive, environmentally sensitive precinct that reflects community aspirations and strengthens Wonga’s role as a place for learning, reflection and celebration while ensuring a financially sustainable outcome.

Council will now progress a Stakeholder Engagement Plan to involve the community and key stakeholders in refining the design.

The proposed Interactive Cultural Landscape provides year-round public access to outdoor spaces including yarning and dance circles for gatherings and ceremonies, a bush tucker garden, walking paths and picnic areas (featuring BBQs, toilets and an undercover learning space). The spaces offer recreational, cultural and educational opportunities.

Albury Mayor Kevin Mack said the revised plan reflects Council’s commitment to collaboration, innovation and responsible planning, while honouring the site’s cultural and environmental significance.

“This is a wonderful way to re-scope and engage with First Nations people,” Mayor Mack said.

“This new approach delivers a more accessible, sustainable and community-focused outcome for Wonga Wetlands, ensuring it remains a place people can enjoy for generations.”

The revised project replaces the original Visitor Education Centre proposal, which had become unsustainable in its previous form.

This updated approach enables Council to deliver a high-quality cultural and environmental outcome at Wonga Wetlands, while ensuring the project remains practical, sustainable and aligned with broader community priorities.

The proposal also opens opportunities for Aboriginal-led construction, maintenance and design input, supporting the goals of Council’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan. The existing historic cottage will be preserved and adapted for use as a visitor display space, ensuring the site continues to support interpretation and education.

AlburyCity will keep the community updated as the Stakeholder Engagement Plan progresses and design details are refined.
