Swimming Pool Certificates
Swimming pools and spas are a place of great enjoyment and fun in the home, however they also come with risks, so it's important to have adequate safety measures in place.
Pool or spa registration
All pools that are capable of being filled with 300mm or more of water and are used, designed, manufactured, or adapted for swimming, wading, paddling or any other human aquatic activity must be registered on the NSW Swimming Pool Register.
You will be provided with a Certificate ofRegistration once you’ve completed the process.
There are penalties for non-compliance under the Swimming Pools Act 1992, including being issued an infringement notice or facing court-imposed penalties, with a maximum penalty of $2,200.
Swimming pool barrier safety inspections
Swimming pool and spa owners are required, by law, in certain circumstances, to have their pool barrier inspected to ensure it meets the safety requirements.
You must have your pool barrier inspected if:
- You are selling or leasing your property
- You are a provider of tourist or visitor accommodation, including hotels, motels, Airbnb, or a strata title property (i.e. a property where there are two or more residences on a property) your pool barrier must be inspected every three years
- Your property is selected to be inspected by Council
- Council receives a complaint about your pool barrier
An inspection must be organised through your local Council or a registered certifier. If your pool complies with the safety standards, you will be issued with a Swimming Pool Certificate of Compliance which is valid for 3 years.

Fees
Our inspection fees have been set in line with the legislation and are laid out in our Fees and Charges.
The fees are currently:
- $150 for your initial inspection
- $100 per inspection should your barrier require any additional inspections (Pensioner discounts apply for the holders of appropriate concession cards)
Please note: an independent private certifier will set their own fees.
