Lost and found animals

Contact us if you have found a stray companion animal or if your pet is missing. If our Rangers pick up your pet and contact with you cannot be made, they will take your pet to the Albury Animal Care Centre. This is where you can be reunited with your pet.

If you find a lost dog or cat

Try to contact the owner if the dog or cat is wearing a collar and identification tag.

  • Otherwise, contact our rangers on 02 6023 8111 between 8:30am–5pm.
  • After hours contact 1300 133 391 (limited collection times)

Please note: Rangers cannot attend after-hours call-outs unless the dog or cat is contained. Rangers will not pick up stray animals between 6pm–8am weekdays and 4pm–8:30am weekends.

  • The information on the microchip will help us contact the owner and return the dog or cat to them.
  • If the dog or cat doesn’t have a microchip or registration, or if the owner can’t be contacted, a ranger will take the dog or cat to the Albury Animal Care Centre.
  • This is why keeping microchip details up to date is so important.

It is illegal to hold an animal that is not yours for longer than is necessary.

For more information about the identification and registration of companion animals and for the duties and responsibilities of their owners, please read the NSW Companion Animals Act, 1998 or review our website for more information.

What to do if your pet goes missing

  • Report your microchipped pet as missing on the NSW Pet Registry
  • Ask around among your neighbours, check local social media group pages, and nearby parks to see if anyone has seen your pet.

If you find a lost dog or cat outside the Albury LGA please contact the relevant council, don’t deliver the animal to the Albury Animal Care Centre.

Impounded animals

As per legislation, dogs and cats impounded in NSW are kept at the Centre for fourteen (14) days if they are microchipped, and seven (7) days if they are not microchipped. All animals impounded from Victoria (microchipped and non-microchipped) are kept for eight (8) days. During this time, we advertise the animal for collection and make other attempts to contact the owner.

Owners have the chance to come forward during this time. If the animal is not claimed within this period, they may then become available for adoption. For more information, please read our Adoption page.
