2. Maintain water quality

3. Test and keep records

Monitor water quality and keep daily records for at least six months.

Keeping pools and spas safe

Poorly maintained water can spread viruses, bacteria and parasites. Operators must maintain effective disinfection, monitor water quality and respond appropriately to contamination incidents.

Operators must:

  • maintain pool equipment and disinfection systems
  • test and monitor water quality
  • keep daily monitoring records
  • maintain a contamination response procedure
  • ensure staff understand pool safety and emergency procedures

Pools covered by these requirements

A public swimming pool or spa pool includes one available to members of the public, customers, employees, guests, students, patients or club members. This includes pools and spas at:

  • hotels, motels and holiday accommodation
  • clubs and workplaces
  • schools and hospitals
  • commercial aquatic and leisure facilities

These requirements apply whether access is free, included with another service or separately charged.

Inspections

Our Environmental Health Officers may inspect public pools and spas to assess water quality, disinfection systems, plant rooms, operating procedures and monitoring records.
